With busier roads than ever, and ever-changing rules to follow, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed trying to remember everything you've been taught. At IAM RoadSmart, we’re here to support road users of all ages – whether it’s your first drive or if you’ve been on the roads for a few years.
Our mission is to make sure younger drivers and riders have the knowledge and skills to enjoy every trip with confidence. Over the past year, we’ve worked closely with new road users to ensure we provide the best guidance and advice. This includes launching our Road Champion initiative, introducing a Young Driver Skills Day, partnering with FirstCar and so much more!
We’re dedicated to giving you the tools you need to navigate the roads safely and confidently.
Our Road Champion community is expanding, where drivers and riders aged 17-26 have access to:

Hugh says his achievements have even encouraged some friends of his to take the course.
“The various courses offered by the IAM have really helped me safely get the most out of my sports car and allow me to enjoy it in ways I simply would never have been able to teach myself without the help of Bristol Advanced Motorists.”

This year, we proudly launched our very first Young Driver Skills Day – a unique event designed specifically for young drivers aged 17-30. The day was packed with exciting experiences, including circuit driving, 4x4 off-roading, skid pan sessions, and more!
With two sessions available, morning and afternoon, participants had the chance to sharpen their skills and gain valuable driving knowledge, all of which can be applied to real-world on-road experiences. It was an unforgettable day of learning and fun, helping young drivers become more confident and capable behind the wheel. Hear from some of our participants below:
"Don’t think about it, just go, do it, it’s great fun here! Everyone around you is here for the same reason, everyone wants to get better at driving. I think it is well worth just going for it and giving it a go!" - Ben, Young Driver Skills Day attendee
"It’s hard, to sum up the day in just 3 words, but I’d say… mind-blowing, exhilarating, and just a lot of fun!” - Leah, Young Driver Skills Day attendee
At IAM RoadSmart, we are dedicated to finding better ways to keep younger drivers and riders safe on the road. Yet, despite our efforts, an alarming number are still involved in serious incidents.
"Vehicles driven by a younger car driver were more likely to have factors ‘loss of control’, ‘exceeding speed limit’ and ‘learner or inexperienced driver’ compared to vehicles driven by drivers of other ages." - UK Government
"Riders under 25 account for 33% of motorcycle KSIs (killed or seriously injured)." - UK Government
To address these troubling statistics, we are advocating for crucial changes, including the introduction of road safety education in the National Curriculum and the removal of the Insurance Premium Tax for those under 25.
